whenever I try to install the latest updates for Windows from microsoft (http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupd... I get I message saying: ''Internet Explorer has encointered a problem and needs to close...). I have antispyware and antivirus software installed already.

I would try disabeling your anti software temp, if that doens't work, try getting msie 7.0?

try closing the anti-virus and anti spyware and pop up blockers
Do u have genuine windows? Before installing Microsoft runs validation tool if Ur copy is not genuine it will stop installing updates. This could b reason. Usually anti virus and spyware doesn't interfere.
